To say that Debra Vines is dedicated to her work in raising Autism awareness would be an understatement.
Vines’ 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization, The Answer Inc., has been in operation since 2007 and focuses on providing resources and support to families in the greater Chicagoland area who are challenged with supporting family members with Autism & Developmental Disorders.
In addition to the resources and support services provided, The Answer, Inc. also works to help contribute to the continued growth and educational and recreational inclusion of children and relatives specifically impacted. Other educational tools are offered: First Responders training, Municipal Staff training, and anti-bullying workshops and seminars. The organization’s stated mission is “to provide and increase Autism awareness for our family member’s caregivers, law enforcement, and the community as a whole” and to create “a healthier and safer environment for families who live with Autism.”
N’DIGO recently spoke with Vines about her work and the ins and outs of Autism.
N’DIGO: How did you get involved in the world of autism activism?
Debra Vines: My son Jason, who is now 36 years old, has autism. My late husband, James Harlan, and I grew tired of complaining about services not being in our community. We started with a support group to fulfill our needs, and The Answer Inc. grew from there. The needs of so many families living with autism/developmental and intellectual disabilities in our community were overwhelming to see. When we launched, so many families did not have that outlet, but we have provided it.
Tell us about your work with your organization, The Answer, Inc.
Since 2007, The Answer Inc. has serviced more than 4,000 families through support, resources, education, recreation, advocacy, social skills, and workforce development. We have evidence-based programs not just for our families but also for training for the community. Our Legislators and Community Leaders are grateful they have an organization to refer to their constituents.
What can you tell us about the recently held 3rd Annual Autism & Developmental Difference Expo?
The 3rd Annual Autism Expo was a baby birthed from the Pandemic. One of our community partners, The Autism Network, contacted me and asked if this was something we could collaborate on. What an amazing idea. The first year was virtual, years two and three were in person, and the turnout was amazing.
What’s the biggest misconception you frequently run into in regards to Autism?
The biggest misconception is that people with Autism can’t live everyday lives. There are so many individuals living with Autism and living normal lives; however, that is the population that has limited language and behavioral challenges that can be combated with excellent therapy services.
Can you name a book that changed or impacted your life and why?
“I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings” by Maya Angelou
What are three words your closest friends would use to describe you?

What is the best advice for those wanting to learn more about autism?
When you get the diagnosis, accept it. It’s not a death sentence. Yes, times are going to be challenging, but guess what? Parenting is challenging.
Favorite quote or affirmation?
