Hey all! It’s your good girlfriend, Tj. I need you all to come to the front because it’s time to talk. Talk About what you say!? Let’s start with the unrealistic beauty expectations you grown folks are spewing on Bill Gates’s internet. It’s been brought to my attention that according to the TikTok “it girls” (pick me if you ask me) that if you’re a baddie, it girl, that girl, beautiful, and or appealing to the ballers, the shot callers or the upper echelon of men you can not I repeat you can not wear braids to the function! As a Black woman who loves her braids and has never had a problem garnishing the affection of any man, woman, son, father, or granddaddy (don’t even get me started on the granddaddies), this is absolutely absurd for so many reasons.
Let’s first explore what makes a woman “bad” because beauty is subjective. Looks usually aren’t the only reason a man considers a woman bad; maybe attractive, but not bad. For those who may not be of the culture, bad is simply a colloquialism for good! Being bad is an energy. Whether it’s with confidence, poise, sex appeal, or rich chick energy, being bad is an experience. Only a real baddie can show up au natural with braids, a ponytail, or even a bald head and command everyone’s curiosity.
Another issue with the idea of beauty, along with it being subjective, is that most people have a preference. A lot of people have a problem with the “p-word“, but preference isn’t horrible. It just means you have a greater liking for one alternative over another. If a man’s preference is slim women, no matter how many beautiful Brazilian bundles wearing Gucci bags totting big booty, tiny waists, wide hip-dragging thick chicks walk past him, only the slim chicks will catch his eye! His quest will be for slim chicks with short hair, long hair, or no hair. What’s appealing to one may not be appealing to another.
Don’t get me wrong; I can see where the TikTok girls could have been trying to go with this declaration. I can absolutely agree that some braided styles don’t mesh well with all attire. If you’re getting dressed for the Queen’s induction, braids to the back probably wouldn’t make your floor-length ball gown pop, but in this instance, we’re focusing on the club. There is no reason why you can’t wear braids to the club and still be a baddie. Braids in this day and age represent so much for a woman, on top of the fact that hairstylists in certain cities charge anywhere from $300.00 to $1000.00 for knotless braids.
Remember that braids are so versatile that we can make moves and look good while preserving our natural tresses. When it’s all said and done, wear what makes you comfortable because when a woman is comfortable, she will let loose and have the time of her life. Wearing braids or any other hairstyle doesn’t diminish a woman’s bad chick energy, especially to the club. The true “it girls” aren’t in the club looking for a man or a come-up because they are the come-up!
In the words of Drake, “you don’t do it for the man; men never notice. You just do it for yourself; you the f*&$ coldest!”
