New Blog: The Kickback – “You People”

Coming up first is the romantic comedy ‘You People’ from Black-ish creator Kenya Barris. The film follows Ezra (Jonah Hill) & Amira (Lauren London) as a couple that has to navigate cultural and political differences as they try to ingratiate themselves with each other’s family. Eddie Murphy (Akbar) and Nia Long (Fatima) play the parents of Amira. I’m not going to lie; I haven’t been a fan of Kenya Barris in a while. I stopped watching Black-ish around the 2nd or 3rd season, and they’re like 40 spin-offs at this point (how many words can you put -ish behind and still have it make sense, Kenya?); however, what keeps me interested is everyone but Barris.

Jonah Hill is one of my favorite actors working today. I’m excited to see Eddie Murphy doing live-action comedy again, and I’m just glad Lauren London will have more to do than just being pregnant and dying like in her last movie, Without Remorse.

“Luther”

The long-awaited follow-up to the hit BBC crime drama ‘Luther’ sees Idris Elba’s eponymous detective break out of prison to take on a new serial killer terrorizing London. Honestly, I’ve watched very little of Luther, and I’m pretty sure this will be for the long-time fans, but I’m willing to give it a watch to see Elba solve crimes and look cool while doing it.

“Extraction 2”

The first ‘Extraction’ film by Sam Hargrave (in his feature directorial debut) was always on repeat in my home in the first year of the pandemic. While it didn’t reinvent the wheel in terms of story, it made up for it in cinematography, fight choreography, and one of the most intense and well-shot car chases I’ve seen in a long time. It was an amazing and exciting 12-minute, one-shot action sequence thrill.

‘Extraction 2’ swaps the streets of Bangladesh for the frozen wilderness of Georgia (the country, not the state) as mercenary Tyler Rake (Chris Hemsworth) returns for another high-stakes mission. This time he is tasked with rescuing a gangster’s family trapped in a high-security prison. Behind-the-scenes footage reveals that producers Joe & Anthony Russo and stuntman-turned-director Hargrave are doubling down on the elements that made the first movie a success and are just continuing to be more creative with the choreography and stunt work.
