ENDORSEMENT: Jesse Jackson Jr. for Congress, Illinois 2nd District

At a moment when trust in public institutions is strained, and leadership too often feels transactional, bullied, gangster-styled, vindictive, and ego-driven, the American political chime clock ticks backwards. Illinois’ 2nd Congressional District has an opportunity to choose experience, intellect, and a proven commitment to public service and aggressive leadership. Jesse Jackson Jr. deserves our endorsement.

The 2nd District is complex—urban and suburban, working-class and professional, rural and unincorporated. Anchored by historic Black communities and energized by new generations demanding fairness, opportunity, and results to address America’s historical inequities. It requires a representative who understands the district’s history and future and can move seamlessly from neighborhood concerns to national policy debates. Jesse brings that rare combination and is the best among the candidates to fight for “rights” in Washington.

During his tenure in Congress, Jackson built a record rooted in advocacy for jobs, infrastructure, education, and civil rights. He worked hard and had one of the best voting records in Congress. He never missed a vote. He was an early and consistent voice for economic equity, advocating for federal investment in long-overlooked communities. He was a voice for “affordability.” His work on transportation and infrastructure anticipated today’s urgent need to rebuild America in ways that create good-paying jobs, professional opportunities, and strengthen local economies. He understood that policy is not abstract—it is personal, and it must deliver.

Equally important, Jackson brings depth. He is a policy thinker, a thought leader, a political mind who reads, studies, and challenges assumptions. In an era of sound bites and slogans, he offers the depth of substance. The 2nd District does not need a puppet for those who live outside the district, a placeholder for other politicos, or a performer seeking a political stage; it needs a legislator prepared to do the hard work of governing—drafting legislation, negotiating outcomes, and holding power to account. What I like most is that in this Trump era, as he suggests that “white people have been denied,” is Jesse’s civil rights historical landscape and sensibility as a welcomed voice that will rise to the political crisis occasion of NOW.

Compared to What and to Whom?

Critics will raise the past. Voters should weigh it honestly—and then consider the full measure of a leader who has faced public scrutiny, taken responsibility, and emerged with renewed purpose. We have a President who sits to make deals and create chaos, and who has been convicted of 34 felonies as he dodges the Epstein files that might reveal sexual misconduct.

Congressman Aaron Schock was a political rising star who also misused campaign funds for “lavish” living. He was treated quite differently from Jackson, with a slap on the wrist, whereas Jackson assumed full responsibility, served the time for the crime, and repaid the $750,000 in misused funds. Redemption is not a political talking point; it is an American value. Experience, especially when tempered by humility and reflection, can sharpen judgment rather than dull it. Jackson comes out a better man for the hard and painful lessons he learned, which helped him see another side of life. By the way, Jackson is Black and Schock is White. Maybe race matters. And then remember the lesson of Senator Ted Kennedy, who had a tragic car accident driving his car off a bridge on Chappaquiddick Island that resulted in the death of a campaign worker. Kennedy’s presidential prospects ended, but he became one of the greatest U.S. Senators ever. Jesse is not so bad, huh?

Jackson’s candidacy also speaks to continuity and legacy—not as inheritance, but as responsibility. The Jackson name is synonymous with civil rights, coalition-building, and global human rights advocacy. Jesse Jackson Jr. has carried that legacy into the legislative arena, translating moral vision into policy outcomes. He delivered nearly a billion dollars to his district, including funding for brown-water remediation in the southern suburbs and for the recognition of historical monuments to ensure they are not forgotten. Jesse has a thoughtful historical perspective. He was responsible for the Rosa Parks statue, the first full-length statue of an African American person in the U.S. Capitol. He is ready for the challenges of the future with AI and other technological advances.

Where is the money coming from?

A central concern in the 2nd Congressional District is true representation. Many residents remember an earlier era, when Mel Reynolds challenged Gus Savage for this seat in 1992 —a contest rooted in local issues and community accountability. Today, there is growing unease that the congressional office is being treated as a commodity, influenced by outside money and plantation-style politics rather than the will of the district. Voters are right to ask: Where is the funding coming from for these costly television advertising campaigns? This race should not be driven by foreign interests or distant agendas. It is not about the Middle East, nor should any member of Congress be positioned for sale to outside powers. What the district deserves is a representative focused solely on the Middle Southland—on the people who live, work, and vote here. Candidates owe the electorate transparency and honesty, beginning with a clear answer to a simple question: where does the money come from? Jackson provides a pure representation for the 2nd Congressional District. – for the people, and by the people.

The challenges ahead—economic inequality, healthcare access, climate resilience, voting rights, war and conflict, and the future of work—demand leaders who understand the dynamics of Washington’s work and remember whom it is supposed to serve. The call, for now, is for who understands the full dynamics of America’s democracy. Jesse Jackson Jr. has demonstrated that he can be that leader for Illinois’ 2nd District. He did it once; he can do it again, with a serene maturity of the meaning of a second chance.

For his experience, his policy acumen, and his recommitment to service, we endorse Jesse Jackson Jr. for Congress. The 2nd District deserves representation that is serious, seasoned, and ready on day one.

Keep hope alive!
