Where is America @250?

America turns 250 this year. Fireworks will burst across city skylines. Museums will mount special exhibits. Orchestras will perform patriotic scores, and politicians will wrap themselves in familiar rhetoric about freedom, opportunity, and greatness. Celebration will be loud, colorful, and choreographed.

But anniversaries of this magnitude demand more than spectacle. They require reckoning.

A nation’s birthday is not simply a moment to look back with nostalgia—it is an invitation to measure who we said we would be against who we have become.

Two hundred and fifty years ago, America declared a radical idea: that power belonged to the people, not a king; that liberty was not a privilege granted by rulers but a right endowed at birth. Yet from its inception, that promise was incomplete. Enslaved Africans, Indigenous people, women, and the poor were excluded from the vision even as the words “all men are created equal” echoed across history.

The American story since then has been a long, uneven struggle to close the gap between promise and practice.

At our best, we have expanded democracy—abolishing slavery, securing voting rights, opening doors to education, innovation, and expression. At our worst, we have resisted that expansion with violence, fear, and laws designed to preserve power for the few. Progress has never been linear; it has been pushed forward by protest, sacrifice, and moral courage, often from those denied a seat at the table. We have yet to live up to the idea of “EQUALITY,” but we are working on it even as we have watched affirmative action policy turn to no action.

So Where Are We Now?

We have a madman in the White House who ignores the Constitution and breaks all the rules. He rules like a king. He rules like Hitler as he takes over countries and considers taking over Cuba, Colombia, and Greenland to control the world’s oil supply. Taking over a country is serious business. People love their land, their culture, and even their bad governments. It is a hell of a thing to say that a people don’t know what they are doing and would be better off with another. Suppose Russia, the Arabs, or China thought to conquer America and take Trump to a Russian jail. We Americans would probably rebel. This is the stuff of war. In the US, only Congress can declare war.

We have ICE roaming primarily in the Blue States. In Minneapolis, we just saw a woman killed, and the ICE murderer will likely receive immunity. What is her crime? She was shot in the head, and a doctor was told he would be shot too if he assisted with her wound, which might have saved her life. We will likely see more of this outrageous behavior as they invade the streets. America has lost its way. Our president has made a profound statement as a political realist. He said, in essence, “if the Republicans lose the midterms, the Democrats would probably impeach him.” He has even said that he might consider canceling the midterms. We think this is impossible, but he has imposed himself on other things that seemed impossible, like tearing down the historic East Wing of the White House and adding his name to established, shining buildings like The Kennedy Center. Mark your calendar for March 3. This is the saving grace day for returning America to a full democracy as it has been traditionally known.

So, in essence, March 3 is a critical day for America. It will determine our democracy. It is about the vote, the most basic element of a democracy. It will determine the idea of America as we have known it for the past 250 years.
