Q&A – Will Thompson, CEO, Urban Visionary Films

Will Thompson

Will Thompson is an award-winning actor and filmmaker who is determined to use his platform via his company, Urban Visionary Films, to give voice to the voiceless and create art that stirs conversation about difficult but necessary topics that we navigate in life.

The Chicago native has an actor’s resume that includes commercials (Adidas, Budweiser, Chevy), film (Good Intentions, Pleading Guilty), television (Chicago Fire, The Chi), and theatre (Absinthe, Mom Always Wanted a Girl), but the avid storyteller in Thompson has been blooming since his 2014 win at the Los Angeles Film Awards for his script, Illuminati.

In 2018, Thompson made his directorial debut with the film Related Destiny, a project in which he also wrote and produced. The short film went on to be a hit on Amazon Prime Video and took home the Best Shorts Competition Award of Merit in 2019. Other accolades Thompson has won for his impassioned and honest storytelling include an Oniros Film Award, Rome Independent Prisma Award, Lift-Off Sessions Film Festival Award, 52 Weeks Film Festival Award for Best Short / Festival Favorite, and a Vegas Movie Award for Best First Time Director and Best Supporting Actor.

Last month, in celebration of May being Mental Health Awareness month, Thompson released his latest film, a thought-provoking project entitled A Life Unwritten. Underscored by a hauntingly beautiful score, the psychological drama also stars Thompson as John Avery, a man dealing with mental health issues while seemingly encountering one hurdle after the other until potentially reaching his breaking point. Crafted to spark dialogue and honest discussions within our community about the realities of mental health awareness and what those affected go through, the film explores themes of resilience, the healing power of self-acceptance, and the fragility of the human mind.

N’DIGO recently sat down with the impassioned auteur to learn more about his inspirations in the film biz and the purpose of the work he does with his filmmaking.

N’DIGO: In your own words, who is Will Thompson?

Will Thompson: I’m a storyteller at heart. I’m an actor, writer, director, and filmmaker who believes in creating work that not only entertains but also heals, challenges, and uplifts. I’m also a father, a husband, a man of faith, and someone who’s committed to growth, personally and professionally.

What’s the first work that you saw that left an impression on you and made you want to pursue filmmaking?

It started with a Jackie Wilson stage play I saw at the Black Ensemble Theater back in high school—that experience lit a spark in me. Later, the film Street Kings left a lasting impression. The emotion, the intensity, and the storytelling made me realize the kind of impact I wanted to have through film.

How did you find your way into the world of media?

I started as an actor in 2009, and that eventually evolved into writing, producing, and directing my own work. For me, media is where my passion and purpose align—and when God gives you purpose, it’s a must that you follow that calling. I didn’t see enough real stories being told from voices like mine, so I created Urban Visionary Films to do just that.

Please tell us about Urban Visionary Films and your latest project, A Life Unwritten.

Urban Visionary Films is my production company dedicated to telling real, impactful stories that represent overlooked voices and truths. My latest film, A Life Unwritten, is one of the most personal projects I’ve ever created. It follows a man battling bipolar disorder and profound grief after losing his family. It’s a raw, emotional journey that speaks to healing, mental health, and the power of facing your past.

Can you talk about the importance of mental health awareness and people having open discussions surrounding mental health?

Mental health is something we all deal with—whether we talk about it or not. And that’s exactly the problem. There’s too much shame and silence around it, especially in our communities. We need to normalize these conversations, let people know it’s okay to not be okay, and provide support without judgment. Films like A Life Unwritten aim to spark those necessary dialogues.

Who are three filmmakers that inspire you?

It’s hard to choose because I pull inspiration from everything, everyone, and everywhere. But if I had to name a few, David Ayer’s grit and realism resonate with me, Deon Taylor’s independent grind is inspiring, and Tommy Oliver’s ability to create impactful, socially relevant work is something I truly admire.

Do you have a personal philosophy as a filmmaker?

Tell the truth—no matter how hard it is. If the story’s honest, it will find its audience. I believe in creating with purpose, not just for applause. Every frame, every scene should move the soul or spark something real.

How do you maintain your mental health and actively participate in your self-care and wellness?

I prioritize my faith, my family, and my physical health. I stay grounded in prayer, communicate openly with my wife, and make time for movement and reflection. I also give myself grace—I’m always working on healing and becoming better, one day at a time.

Best advice about the business that you’ve ever been given?

“Don’t wait for permission.” If you have a story to tell, tell it. Build your lane and your platform. You can’t wait for the industry to validate you—validate yourself through your work.

Best advice or words of wisdom you can give to aspiring media professionals?

Be relentless. Learn every angle of the craft. Stay ready and stay humble. Don’t be afraid to start small, and don’t lose sight of your why. Your voice matters, and your time will come—keep creating.

Favorite quote or affirmation?

The world meets nobody halfway.” This phrase comes from one of my favorite movies, “Over the Top.”

Also: “God doesn’t call the qualified; He qualifies the called.” That one has guided me through every moment of doubt.

What’s next for Will Thompson?

Right now, I’m pushing A Life Unwritten through festivals, community screenings, and discussions to amplify the message. I’m also developing new film and TV projects under Urban Visionary Films that explore mental health, faith, and redemption. I’m staying focused, faithful, and ready for whatever doors God opens next.
