N’DIGO is thrilled to provide its readers with an update on Eva Ruwè, the story behind the TINA audition, and what lies next for this self-described “quiet storm.”

N’DIGO: Who is Eva Ruwé?
Eva Ruwé: Eva Ruwé is a complete creative through and through. I am often in my head and in my feelings, so to speak. I enjoy seeing those thoughts and ideas take form in the physical.
At what age did you start singing? Did you grow up singing in church?
I was told I was humming along with my mother before I was 1 years old. Yes. Good ole Church of God in Christ. I am fortunate to have that spiritual musical background.
When did you realize that you had what it takes to share your talent with the world?
It was when I was 12 years old that I fully accepted I was born for more than a church pulpit. Once I began hitting those Minnie Riperton whistle tones…… I knew!
Who or what continues to inspire you most as an artist, and why?
To this day, it’s Whitney Houston. Knowing that we both have a church background, both come from musical families, and broke into acting careers. I loved her poise. Her ability to be sure of herself yet humble enough to sing background for her friends (Bebe & Cece Winans), really spoke to her character!

How did the opportunity for TINA – The Tina Turner Musical come about?
I had some musical theater credits, however I was ready to take my career to the next level. I signed with a talent manager, and it was the first audition I submitted. I almost didn’t try out because it was for the role of Tina. I was thinking I can only play Tina from the knees down, ok, lol. I booked the role of GG (Tina’s Grandma). It taught me to audition anyway and know our gifts will make room for us.
What made you want to take on this opportunity?
It has always been a vision of mine to go on tour and to do theatre on the Broadway level. It allowed me to travel the world, do what I love, and make money. At my age, I was encouraged to stop pursuing acting, but Marla Gibbs was a huge inspiration. She rose to fame in her mid-forties. Don’t let age stop you!
Do you keep your voice in tip-top shape during your performances?
Although difficult, when you’re constantly going between different climates, time zones, and sleeping upright on a bus, yes, I do! Gotta sleep, hydrate, warm up, and cool down at all times.

Who were your musical influences? Who were the artists that made you want to pursue music?
Karen Clark-Sheard, Kim McFarland, Daryl Coley, and Vanessa Bell Armstrong on the gospel side. Mariah Carey, Brandy, and Babyface made me want to pursue a career in it.
I take it you trust your instincts, or is it mainly having favor in your life?
I must say I have favor on my life even when I don’t trust my own instincts. I believe God had his hand on m,e and I’m glad he chose me.
Best advice ever given?
Do it afraid!
What are three of your all-time favorite albums?
Kirk Franklin – God’s Property
Anita Baker – Giving You the Best That I’ve Got
Mariah Carey – Here for it All

What’s something people would be surprised to know about you?
I am a professional Poker Dealer.
Best advice for young artists?
Find your tribe, build a network, and only work with producers/musicians who believe in you.
Favorite quote or affirmation?
Psalms 27:13
I would’ve lost heart, unless I believed to see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.
What do you like to do when you’re not working?
I love to play spades and board games, all while cooking for everyone.
If you could have food from Chicago right now, what would you choose?
A Gyros, meat well done, and mild sauce on my fries. Come on Big Jesus!
What’s next for Eva Ruwé?
You can expect to see me in TV/films, more theatrical productions, and
dropping more music in the spring.
