Social media can feel overwhelming at times. It has transformed the way we communicate, emphasizing short, bite-sized updates. However, specific unwritten rules should guide how we use these platforms. Here are some thoughts on dos and don’ts.

Texting…

Texting is a quick and efficient communication method, perfect for sharing logistics like times, addresses, or quick updates. However, serious conversations deserve more than a text message. Texting to avoid difficult conversations is inconsiderate—some things are better discussed in person or over the phone. For instance, announcing a death via text is too impersonal; such news requires the warmth of a phone call unless it’s part of a public announcement.

As a rule of thumb, if your text is long enough to resemble an essay, it’s better suited for an email or phone call. I once received a request to edit a 14,000-word text. My response? “Surely, this is a joke!”

Facebook has turned everyone into amateur journalists. While sharing milestones like anniversaries, weddings, and achievements is great, only some things must be broadcast. Avoid over-sharing personal details, such as your drunken escapades or risky behavior, as these can have long-term consequences. Remember, employers often check social media profiles. A seemingly harmless post about a hobby, like motorcycle riding, could make you seem like a liability to a cautious employer. Use Facebook wisely, showcasing the joyous moments in your life.

TikTok has become the king of short, impactful videos. It’s a fantastic platform for sharing helpful content like health tips, recipes, home remedies, and practical advice. Entrepreneurs and small businesses, in particular, can benefit from its reach. Let’s leave inappropriate content—like overly revealing videos—off TikTok. This platform thrives on creativity and learning, not attention-seeking antics.

Reels…

Reels are an entertaining trip down memory lane. They’re perfect for nostalgic moments featuring TV legends like Johnny Carson, Michael Jackson, or Frank Sinatra. Steve Harvey, for instance, shines with his reels featuring kids—funny, candid, and heartwarming. His good romantic advance is always interesting. Funny moments. However, not every attempt at nostalgia hits the mark. Immitations of the celebs is always fun. I love the new TV and movie marketing.

A Word of Caution

While politicians and influencers use social media to sway opinions, it’s crucial to approach such content critically. Not everything online is as it seems, and deception is rampant. These platforms have immense power to shape perceptions, so always verify before believing or sharing. But the real big thing about social media is it is not always true. Fact checking is not a part of the story.
