Above all else, Terri Terrell is an artist at heart and has devoted herself to connecting with others and helping them reach their full potential.
The southern California-raised Chicago transplant attained her Bachelor of Arts from Xavier University of LA and her Master of Business Administration from Robert Morris University. As the founder of Modes of Expression, a lifestyle and wellness brand, Terri celebrates creativity and promotes individuality through various creative ventures. In addition to her creative works, Terrell is also a mental health advocate and weekly volunteer at a mental health support and crisis intervention organization.
Terrell recently added the title of “first-time author” to her resume with the release of her book Positive Vibes Only: A Daily Journal for Creating the World You Want Through Positive Thinking, a self-reflection, self-improvement journal designed to help readers organize the tools that will help them live a more happy and productive life.
N’DIGO recently sat down with Terrell to learn more about her artistic endeavors and the inspiration behind her new book.
N’DIGO: In your own words, who is Terri Terrell?
Terri Terrell: I am a woman, a daughter, a sister, and a friend. I’m also an entrepreneur, author, and believer in miracles.
What are three words family and friends would use to describe you?
Loyal. Supportive. Driven.
As a child, what did you dream of doing for a living?
My earliest memories of what I wanted to be as a child are of always reading my mom’s Cosmopolitan magazines and deciding I would be a model. You couldn’t tell me different. I was obsessed with those magazines. I would be in the mirror for hours practicing my cover poses.
What can you tell us about Modes of Expression?
Modes of Expression is my wellness and lifestyle brand, under which I have a number of creative endeavors. I have some fun apparel there. There are the “Reborn Dolls” that I do, which are handmade art dolls. I am passionate about helping others reach their full potential, especially young girls and women. One percent of all sales generated by Modes of Expression are donated to causes that support the growth, health, and well-being of women and children.
Please tell us about your recently released book Positive Vibes Only: A Daily Journal for Creating the World You Want Through Positive Thinking and what inspired you to create it.
Positive Vibes Only is a self-reflection journal created to help people think more positively. After years of struggling with negative thoughts, I was inspired to make the book. I wanted to change my thoughts but did not know how. I read many books on positive thinking but could never maintain the happy feelings I received while focusing on the books. I finally figured out how to train myself to think more positively, and I wrote the book to help others, hopefully.
What would you like readers to take away from the book?
I believe you must train your brain to think positively. Just like you train your body, it will take repetition, determination, and focus to see the results /think of the results you want. I hope that readers follow the tools in the book and start noticing positive changes in their lives.
Fave genre of books to read?
While I do read a little of everything that sparks my interest, I find that these days, inspirational and uplifting books are my go-to reads.
What’s something people would be surprised to know about you?
I’m a Reborn Artist.
Best advice to aspiring writers?
I would tell aspiring writers not to be afraid to find and write in their own voices. Sometimes, when we go to write, we accidentally may find ourselves writing in the voice of our favorite author, but you have to guard against that and make sure you are writing/speaking in your own voice.
Favorite quote or affirmation?
“It’s never too late to be what you might have been.”
What’s next for Terri Terrell?
I plan to continue promoting positive thinking; I truly believe negative thoughts keep people from achieving their dreams and goals. I’m also working on a new product for Modes of Expression, so stay tuned. More to come, for sure.
