Q&A – Michelle Hayes – Owner, Hayes Talent Agency

Michelle Hayes

As owner and lead agent of Chicago-based Hayes Talent Agency, Michelle Hayes has dedicated herself to helping countless others achieve their big-screen dreams.

Hayes is a graduate of Hampton University and holds an MBA from National Louis University. After finding her way into the entertainment industry as a model, she quickly became business savvy and learned the ins and outs of the fast-paced business. She soon began consulting talent before switching to representing talent for roles in commercials, film, television, and more.

Utilizing her knowledge and know-how with more than two decades of experience, Hayes has grown her agency into a runaway success. With offices in Chicago, Atlanta, and Los Angeles, she has launched the careers of many actors and has booked talent on shows such as “Chicago Fire,” “Insecure,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” “The Chi,” “Power Book IV: Force,” and “Young Rock,” among many others.

Selected as a Change Agent by TV One, Hayes works tirelessly to help create an even playing field for minority and underserved talent, and he frequently collaborated with the Illinois film office to address diversity in the TV and film industry.

N’DIGO recently caught up with Hayes to learn more about her career path and how she makes the magic happen for her clients.

N’DIGO: In your own words, who is Michelle Hayes?

Michelle Hayes: I am a mother, a wife, a sibling, a daughter, and a woman of faith. I am a champion of people. I am an advocate. I am a fighter. I am a woman working in her purpose to create opportunities for those that are traditionally overlooked.

What are three words family and friends would use to describe you?

Fair. Resourceful. Tenacious.

How did you find your way on your career path?

I’ve always been a fan of entertainment, but after graduating from Hampton University, my plan was to go into advertising and marketing. As it turned out, the job market was dry in those fields, so I began modeling, and a whole new world opened up for me.

Fair to say your transition into modeling changed the trajectory of your life?

Absolutely. I lucked out because the first photographer I worked with gave me so much game and knowledge about the industry. From there, more roles and opportunities materialized, and I learned more and more each step of the way. By time I decided to step from in front of the camera, I knew so much about the business of things I began consulting talent and that led me on the path of owning a successful agency.

Please tell us about your company, Hayes Talent Agency.

Hayes Talent is a boutique agency representing adults and children for TV, film, commercials, voice-over, theater, print, and more. Our agency prides itself on showcasing a diverse roster that emphasizes representing multicultural talent. I am especially proud to say that we are the only African-American-owned agency to have Screen Actors Guild (SAG) certified offices in Chicago, Atlanta, and Los Angeles.

What’s the biggest misconception you frequently run into as a Talent Agent?

That getting an agent means you’ve got it made. Sometimes, people think I can click a button or call and put them on TV. I only wished it worked that way and was that easy. Instead, as an agent, my job is to help create opportunities for you by helping you get auditions and get in front of casting.

In balancing your family life and work duties, what do you do for self-care to preserve your mental health?

I’ll admit that I still have to work at finding balance sometimes, but I have the things that help me maintain it—regularly getting massages help. Staying on top of my workout regime is another big thing for me. Thankfully, my family pitches in and ensures I get quiet and alone time, which is a big help.

What’s something people would be surprised to know about you?

Believe it or not, I do not like to talk about myself.

What is the Best advice to those aspiring to break into the business?

Research. Read as many books on the industry as you can. You’ll be much ahead of the game if you know the terminology and how to properly put together your materials to present to agents, managers, and casting offices. You’ll also know the red flags of potential scammers and how to avoid them.

Favorite quote or affirmation?
