The must-see movie “Origin” delves into the impact of caste and race in society, as explored by author Isabel Wilkerson in her bestselling book “Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents.” This powerful documentary not only offers a historical review but also sheds light on the tragedy and inhumanity that result from systems of power, control, and wealth. From America’s racism to Nazi Germany and the oppression of The Untouchables in India, this film provides a deep understanding of the caste system.

Written and directed by the talented Ava DuVernray, she brilliantly brings Wilkerson’s book “Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents” to life.

Origin” goes beyond surface-level discussions of racism, examining the dynamics and abuses of power. It takes a scholarly approach, unveiling the ills of government and how hatred, power, and money are used as tools of oppression. This film is part of a new wave of media that challenges stereotypes and prompts more profound reflection on Blackness.

Guided by the stellar performance from Oscar nominee Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor (King Richard), Wilkerson’s personal life at the time of the writing is filled with loss. Her mother transitions from home to a nursing facility and eventually dies. Her husband suddenly dies, and her cousin and best friend, who is her sounding board, dies, too, while she is in India.  Through the story of Wilkerson’s writing process, the film encompasses a journey of loss and examines the thesis that goes beyond mere racism to explore social systems of oppression.

Through her research, discussions, and writing, Wilkerson uncovers the underlying caste system that exists in Nazi Germany, America during segregation, and other parts of the world. “Origin” showcases the courage to confront and challenge the caste system, drawing inspiration for  the work of individuals like Gandhi, Dr. King, and Mandela.

The film takes viewers to the heart of Germany’s history, where books of Jewish intellectuality were burned, and highlights the study of the Deep South’s caste system by Dr. Allison Davis. It also sheds light on the mistreatment of Dalits in India and their role in disposing of human waste. By connecting these global examples of oppression, “Origin” reveals the typical behaviors that dehumanize individuals, even those with shared cultural backgrounds and the same skin color. The film further uncovers Germany’s interest in America’s racist practices and its influence on their discriminatory policies, emphasizing the importance of understanding the impact of a caste system.

DuVernray’s masterful direction brings the intricacies of the caste system to life, offering food for thought as we approach a new presidential election cycle. “Origin” has the potential to open eyes and provoke conversations about power, control, democracy,  and the importance of confronting the caste system.

Origin is as powerful as a movie. Its story is universal, and its themes and concerns should resonate with viewers regardless of race, gender, creed, or sexual orientation. Hopefully, people will read the book Caste and see the film. Hopefully, it will be discussed in the classroom, social settings, and, most of all, church.

Although brilliant, the film has failed to win significant film nominations and prizes. White Hollywood isn’t ready for a movie by a Black filmmaker that stars a Black actress talking about the Black experience beyond the tap dance. This is real history and history in the making—a must-see.
