The Brilliance of Lizzo!

So, I accidentally watched ‘Watch Out for the Big Grrrls’ on Amazon by Lizzo. I like her, she has a wonderful voice, and she is playful, perky, inspirational. I watched a few episodes and was wondering is this for real? Couldn’t figure it out after the third episode. I was calling girlfriends demanding that they take a look. I was calling it obscene. Nasty mouths, seriously obese young Black women, cussing excessively, and Lizzo’s absolutely in charge. I did realize she was making a splash of a sort, a new release, perhaps a unique way of introducing a new worldwide tour, or maybe even marriage, maybe a clothing line.

Lizzo has refused to conform to current body standards. Believe it or not but she has been vegan since June 2020. She very is proud of her  300 lb. body and embraces both her inner and outer self, and doesn’t care what critics have to say. The road to stardom hasn’t always been easy for her. Many assume that Lizzo shot to fame. Fans were first introduced to her in 2019 and fell hard for her vibrancy, cockiness, and music. It took several years of performing to thin crowds, facing hard criticism, living in her car, and struggling to stretch every single penny for her to live ‘unapologetically.”

Lizzo is proud of her big body and wears skimpy cut-away clothes to prove it on the red carpet in full display of “fatness.” She even has taken public nudies to prove no shame posted on her Instagram page.

The premise of the eight-episode hows is she is auditioning big girls for her upcoming traveling show. She wants plus sizes, overweight, well-endowed young women who can dance and move from the floor to the pole. No one is sent home until training is complete. The girls are supportive and develop a bond. Interestingly she gives pep talks to say you are all that, don’t be ashamed of your body. You are big and beautiful, and hopefully, you can dance and I can have an all-girl, big girl dancing backup. You have to see it for yourself. It is wild to watch 250 pounds plus twerking and rolling on the floor. But there it is. She even has awards for the dancers.  The “B” award.

Lizzo is the class master as she provides sound advice and motivational messages offering self-encouragement as she seeks those who look like her. She is constantly building self-esteem. She decides to look for her very own talent herself because the agencies don’t get it. Skinny girls need not apply. Brilliantly she made a TV show out of her search for the talent and the look she was seeking. Some big girls don’t make it because they don’t have the strength and stamina to sustain a 90-minute dance routine. Even a transgender person transitioning from male to female auditions for the team.

Lizzo brings in a coach to teach the large women to be sexy. And she brings in a producer type to look at the presentation and look at it on stage for the optic dynamics. She gives real women, big women, a chance for the limelight, with no apology. She presents them proudly.

So, here’s the genius. Shortly after the show appears she introduces YITTY.

YITTY is a revolutionary shapewear brand for larger women created in partnership with Fabletics. Yitty is named after her aunt who gave Lizzo her nickname as a child. Nearly Naked, Mesh Me, and Major Label are the names of the collection. It’s available online in bold colors and wild designs. The shapewear company develops from her very own shopping experience of looking for a certain garment that didn’t come in her size or was limited to the basic colors of black, white, or beige. The size range is XS to 6X, the price range is from $49.95 to $69.95.

Lizzo has introduced a new model, a new category, a new niche in the world of lingerie, shape wear and leisure clothing. She follows the direct path of the Kardashians. If pretty, think, well made up,  pretty faces, for lovely big women. Lizzo spoke to those who will never be pencil thin and who have no representation. She saw a market gap and she has taken it by storm. She introduced her brand with a television show and with a precision timing to bring her stuff to the marketplace. She will make a mint. The television show introduces her new garments subliminally.

I am impressed. But one thing. As these young women approach the stage and proudly parade their grandness, what about healthy living? That is weight loss, exercise, and healthy eating. The weight is overwhelming and somebody should tell them to avoid diabetes, heart issues, and kidney failure.   Healthy living beats obesity. African American women have the highest rates of obesity or being overweight compared to other groups in the United States. About 4 out of 5 African American women are overweight or obese.

I love the marketing, but maybe after Lizzo has established her underwear fortune, she too will look at weight loss with high-end marketing, a beautiful face, good eating, healthy living, and EXERCISE.
