SMOKEY JOE IS A GREAT RETRO SHOW ON ROCK AND ROLL.

Smokey Joes Cafe_Logo_Color

SMOKEY JOE’s CAFÉ is playing at the Royal George Cabaret, 1641 North Halsted. The show was just extended to June 30 by popular demand. It is no wonder why. They have also just received 5 Jeff Nominations. Way to go.

This is a musical featuring the songs of Rock’N Roll pioneers – Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. The music takes you down memory lane, it is the music of dance. The actors are high energy under the direction of Brenda Didier making for a perfect blend. The show setting is a night club and presents the music as it was originally played in urban joints, making it authentic and real. This became the music of the large stage that started in the joint and was played on real radio by disc jockeys that told a story.

The show highlights 40 original tunes of Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. This is the music of the 70’s that was introduced on the Dick Clark Show and Soul Train. The Old School show takes some down memory lane and for others it is a major introduction for generation X and Y. It is a family show. It is a show of Rock and Roll Classics weaved with Rhythm and Blues Hits.

You are bound to hear a Leiber and Stoller tune that you know, like – “Charlie Brown,” “Jailhouse Rock” and “Dance With Me.” And then you are bound to hear some that you didn’t know were by the dynamic songwriting duo, like – “Spanish Harlem,” “Fools Fall in Love,” and “On Broadway.”

This is a great show. Tickets range from $25 to $46.50. Tickets are available at the Royal George Box Office and online at www.ticketmaster.com of by phone 312. 988.9000. Performances are Thursdays and Fridays at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at 5 and 8p.m. and Sundays at 2 and 6 p.m.
