In an effort to remember and give honor to Chicago’s first African American mayor, a diverse group of supporters has formed the Harold Washington Tribute Committee to commemorate his legacy.

 

 Monday, April 29, 2013 will mark the 30th anniversary of the inauguration of Mayor Harold Washington, Chicago’s first African American mayor.
What an exciting time in the city of Chicago. Though his tenure ended much too soon, he left an indelible impression on this city. Through his policies, Chicagoans on all levels benefited greatly with some continuing to benefit.

 

A diverse group of supporters who believes his transformative accomplishments should be recognized, preserve and perpetuated has formed the Harold Washington Tribute Committee (HWTC) to establish a citywide recognition of him during the month of April.

 

The ultimate goal is to create sustainable programs that will perpetuate Mayor Harold Washington’s legacy for future generations.

On Friday, April 12, 2013, the date of his historic election, the HWTC launched “The Man, the Moment, the Movement: Remembering and Aspiring” at the Morman Grand at 2230 South Michigan Avenue.
