Cruel and Unusual Punishment: Has Law and Order SVU Crossed the Line with Chris Brown and Rihanna- Like Storyline?

The 55th Annual GRAMMY Awards - Backstage And Audience

The Law & Order franchise has made no qualms about ripping their storylines from the headlines, and adding their own spin to the actual events.

“Selfish,” an episode based on Casey Anthony’s murder trial garnered some of the series’ highest ratings. This came as no surprise, seeing that the trial was ongoing and captured the nation’s attention with its real life theatrics. The producers of the show have figured out the ironic equation that is viewership.

Like a Broadway-worthy production, when it comes to television, the people love a realistic yet twisted tale laced with high drama.

In comes the perfect story line. From stage left, enters the beautiful African American pop princess with an edgy appeal and an even edgier and equally talented R&B singing beau. The famous mulattos are rich, famous, and seemingly addicted to attention. Their intense love affair followed by their massive fan following, hit the proverbial climax when he savagely beats her. Ring any bells? Ok, how about this. The beautiful singer, despite the chagrin of everyone, decides to go back to her boyfriend following the much-hyped tussle. But here comes the Tony worthy scene; the singer dies at the hand of her abusive boyfriend. By now you have probably determined that the upcoming episode is based on the real life “play” of events that is Chris Brown and Rihanna’s happenings.  However, the  Law & Order: SVU writers distastefully decide to pen their own ending to the thinly veiled incident.

Rihanna & Chris Brown cozy up in Hawaii for Rih’s 25th Birthday.

The previews for the NBC show came on the heels of Rihanna’s 25thand heavily Instagram-ed birthday, which was spent in the arms of her newly forgiven boyfriend, Chris Brown.

For the last four years, these two twenty somethings have hijacked the minds and eyes of millions, prompting emotional debates on love, entertainment, forgiveness and domestic abuse.  This comes as no surprise, seeing that we were kept updated about, even the most minute of events following the horrific 2009 incident; most of the time even from the artists themselves (see Rihanna’s video for We Found Love).

In this land of freely spoken speech, we have all, at one time voiced our opinion of their relationship, what with its  plot twists that could rivals those of Les Miserables.  However, no entity thus far with as much clout and visibility as a nationally syndicated network television show like LAW & ORDER: SVU has so distastefully and bluntly voiced their opinion, no, screamed their opinion as to what they believe the young singers’ fates will be.

To slap some fake names and slightly different circumstantial details on the Chris and Rihanna saga, and ultimately display the young singer’s “hypothetical” death is in extremely bad taste.

Now please do not misconstrue my intentions with this article. I am in no way, shape, form or fashion condoning Mr. Brown’s actions. I am however, expressing my unhappiness with the way the aforementioned show has decided to capitalize on a painful and highly damaging event that is Chris Brown and Rihanna’s domestic quarrel. I realize that the price of fame is the forfeiture of most aspects of privacy. However, their life should not be displayed down to the “T” and then fatally re-imagined in the end, just to gain more viewership.

The reason I say this is because, to no one’s surprise, the long running show has seen better days when it comes to their ratings, and lack thereof.

The episode is slated to air tonight at 8/9c on NBC.

There are actually certainly a great deal of details like that to take into consideration. That is an incredible point to bring up. I supply the thoughts above as general inspiration but clearly one can find questions like the one you bring up where probably the most crucial thing will likely be working in honest fantastic faith. I don?t know if ideal practices have emerged around issues like that, but I am sure that your job is clearly identified as a fair game. Both boys and girls really feel the impact of just a moment’s pleasure, for the rest of their lives.
