The South Side Community Art Center (SSCAC) will host the Maleness to Manhood:  Reclamation of the Young Black Man exhibit beginning September 6th.  The exhibit features 45 noted male artists of color who are using the exhibit as a visual response to the ongoing violence and multi-layered crisis facing young Black men in the community.  The exhibit runs through October 5, 2013 with several special events slated during the month long run.

The exhibit kicked off with a successful Opening Reception on September 6th. There will be an Artist Talk at the Center on September 28, from 2 – 5 p.m. hosted by WBEZ contributor Lee Bey and featuring many of the over 40 male artist participating, and on October 5, the Center will host a Closing Reception.

I encourage you all to take part in these events and support this exhibit. We are losing too many of our youth and too many young men are getting caught up in mixed messages of what being a man really means.  The artwork is provocative and encourages us all to take an in-depth look at what our men and young boys are facing in today’s society.  Educate yourselves and let’s dialogue and then act on some solutions.
