Sarah Vaughan Forever

sarah-vaughan-ndigo-chicagoThe US Postal Service is honoring jazz singer Sarah Vaughan with a forever stamp set for unveiling in Newark, N.J. in March.

The stamp art is an oil painting of Vaughan in performance based on a 1955 photograph by Hugh Bell. The cover side of the pane features a larger version of the stamp art, a list of some of Vaughan’s popular songs, and the Music Icons logo. Bart Forbes was the artist and Ethel Kessler was the art director.

Vaughan was born in Newark in 1924. Her family lived on Brunswick Street and she attended East Side High School, later transferring to Newark Arts High School. She’s best known for the songs “Misty,” “Lullaby of Birdland” and “My Funny Valentine.” Vaughan died in 1990 in Hidden Hills, Calif. at age 66.

The First-Day-of-Issue dedication ceremony will take place March 29 at 11 a.m. at the Sarah Vaughan Concert Hall in Newark.
